PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:

  • Development of highly effective performance-based corrosion mitigation programs to assure pipeline integrity versus prescriptive regulations to extend reliable pipeline life.

  • Identification of a suite of internal corrosion monitoring techniques and protocols for buried or submerged pipelines. An introduction to corrosion economic evaluations; this can be used to gain senior management acceptance and buy-in for corrosion interventions.

  • Development of ILI and/or ECDA/ICDA programs for piggable and non-piggable pipelines. An introduction to the relevance of ICPM protocols and their importance in the development of effective corrosion control programs.

  • Proper development of an overall pipeline system or network corrosion management plan through the introduction of three sub-programs including PIM, RCC and OQ.

  • Identification of common internal and external corrosion mechanisms, their cause and intervention options available to minimize the degradation of pipeline assets.

PROGRAM OUTLINES:

1. Strategies for Minimizing Pipeline Corrosion Program

  • Corrosion strategies for maintaining pipeline integrity
  • Developing a comprehensive Corrosion Management Plan (CMP)
  • Systematic approach to implementing cathodic protection to minimize external pipeline corrosion
  • Systematic approach to formulate and to implement maintenance plans to minimize internal pipeline corrosion

2. External and Internal Corrosion Maintenance Techniques

  • Examining the different types of corrosion
  • Key differences between CO2 and H2S corrosion mechanisms
  • Significance of flow regimes prevailing inside a pipeline
  • Assessing and mitigating the different types of corrosion for different operating phases (commissioning, normal, intermittent, shut-in for turnarounds, mothballing, acidisation, etc.)
